Faith Communities

Faithful Welcome

CWS was founded in 1946 because American congregations felt called to welcome the stranger due to the immense international need for refuge after World War II. Faith communities are still at the heart of refugee resettlement and immigrant support; our office is blessed every day by faith communities who organize donation drives, furnish apartments, host fundraisers, and offer friendship and support for refugees from around the world who have made their home in Durham.
Your congregation can be a welcoming neighbor to newcomers as they rebuild their lives here.

Together We Welcome

On March 4th, 2022, CWS along with our Faith Solidarity Team invited faith leaders, clergy, community organizers and immigrant leaders to a dynamic virtual and inaugural event to hear from impacted voices as well as timely and relevant information about resettlement & migration from faith leaders, national and local resettlement staff and other experts in forced migration. Attendees spent the weekend learning about migration and displacement and walked away with specific action steps to foster welcome in their local communities.

Justice in Action

Welcome Teams

CWS Durham partners with local congregations and community groups to set up apartments for newly-arrived refugees.

Welcome Teams are a hugely important part of welcoming new neighbors to the U.S. - also there is nothing quite so rewarding as creating someone's first home!

Community Sponsorship

Welcome newly arrived refugees to Durham through community sponsorship. As a community sponsor, your group of 7-10 becomes a partner with CWS Durham to greet a refugee family at the airport, assist them in securing and furnishing initial housing, connect them with local services, and show them all of the things that make our community so special!

  • Holding a special offering during a service
